As you’re probably aware by now, computers across the world were hit by a large-scale cyber-attack on Friday 12 May. High-profile organisations such as the NHS were affected by the attack. So what exactly happened and how can you protect your data in the event of similar security breaches?
What is Ransomware?
Ransomware is malicious software that encrypts user data until a fee or ‘ransom’ has been paid. Ransomware attacks have steadily increased in the last few years and victims can range from home users to global corporations.
What is WannaCry?
WannaCry is a variant of ranomware that spreads by email and has so far infected computers in as many as 99 countries. The virus demanded that users pay $300 within six hours. If users did not comply, the ransom would be increased every few hours until payment was made.

Am I at Risk?
All of our clients that are hosted in the Cantarus datacentre receive basic protection from ransomware attacks
Our Sonicwall Gateway Anti-Virus and Intrusion Prevention Systems provide basic protection to all of clients hosted in Cantarus datacentres. Sonicwall identified the potential vulnerability in mid-April 2017 and virus protection software was made available shortly thereafter. However, we strongly recommend that all Cantarus customers install any outstanding Windows updates as soon as possible. Furthermore, any endpoints that are used to connect to your hosted infrastructure should also be updated to prevent any complications arising from ransomware threat.
Can I Protect Myself Further?
To ensure that your data is protected to the highest possible level, we recommend the following actions:
- Ensure all Windows Servers have Windows Updates installed.
- Ensure all Windows Endpoints have Windows Updates installed.
- Ensure all Windows Endpoints are running up to date Anti-Virus protection
- Ensure you have proper Anti-Spam and e-mail security software in place to prevent the original infection.
- All SonicWall customers should ensure they have a full CGSS licence installed on their firewalls.
