In a series of blogs about what life is like at Cantarus, we had a chat with our Senior Consultant, James, to find out what he gets up to in his day-to-day role at the agency.

Hey James! Can you start by telling us a bit about yourself and your role at Cantarus?

Sure! I’m a Senior Consultant working in the Strategic Consulting team, and my role covers a few key areas – developing new business, managing relationships with our existing clients, and providing technology consultancy services.

Talk to us about your background and how you got into your current role…

Before joining Cantarus, I worked at the Institute of Directors for nearly 10 years, latterly serving as Head of Membership Experience for 2 years. The role gave me a massive amount of insight into the challenges and opportunities present in the membership sector. Since joining the Cantarus team, I’ve had the opportunity to put that experience to good use, helping to advise and support our 53 membership sector clients.

What attracted you to work at Cantarus?

The team at Cantarus is exceptionally talented and knowledgeable – it’s a rare day that I don’t learn something new or develop my skills in some way. The company has an inclusive and supportive culture (as evidenced by our 5/5 Glassdoor rating), with a meritocratic structure that gives ambitious team members myriad opportunities to develop new skills and progress their careers. That, and there’s a pool table in the office that also does air hockey and table tennis!

What does a typical working day/week look like for you?

No two days are the same – which is definitely an advantage! In any given week, I could be writing a proposal for a website project, speaking on a webinar about online community, meeting with existing clients to support their accounts, or be on-site with an organisation advising on their future technology strategy.

What skills would you say are most important for the role of Senior Consultant?

People skills are essential – whether I’m developing relationships with clients, speaking to a new prospect, or delivering a webinar, the ability to connect with, listen to and develop a detailed understanding of a client’s needs is fundamental to the role. Relevant experience is also a big advantage – my extensive background in membership has given me a huge amount of insight into the needs, challenges and opportunities present in the sector.

What have you recently been working on? Is there anything that you are most proud of or excited about?

We recently completed a consultancy exercise with a membership organisation to help advise on a data collection methodology for their equality, diversity, and inclusion project. We’re super excited that our work has contributed in a small way towards such a transformational initiative!

What’s the best bit about your job?

Definitely the people – the Cantarus team is brimming with talent, and managing relationships with our broad portfolio of clients has given me the opportunity to meet and connect with a lot of inspirational people!

And finally, what’s the best piece of advice you have for anyone looking to get into a similar role?

Make sure you check out a company’s Glassdoor rating before applying, and if possible, try to speak to current and former employees to get a flavour of the organisation’s culture. Doing your research pays dividends!
