Award-winning digital agency, Cantarus, has partnered with The British Army to launch a fully digital platform for Soldier Magazine, marking a historic transformation in the publication’s 80-year-legacy.
Since its inception in March 1945, Soldier has been at the heart of military journalism, standing shoulder to shoulder with troops to report on every major conflict and key issue shaping military life. Previously available only in print, the magazine now offers instant online access to new issues, alongside a comprehensive digital archive dating back to its very first publication – launched under Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery.
The new website, designed and developed by Cantarus on the Umbraco CMS, ensures that decades of Army history are preserved and easily accessible to both Army personnel and the general public. By transitioning from print to digital, this transformation enhances accessibility, streamlines distribution, and makes it easier than ever to explore Soldier’s rich content – from frontline reporting to in-depth features on military life.
Jess Jones, Head of Digital and Content at British Army, comments:
“Launching a new and improved digital edition of Soldier when the magazine celebrates its 80th anniversary is the perfect ‘free gift’ for our loyal readers.
Improving the online Soldier magazine offer also provides greater opportunity to inspire wider audiences, online, through its fascinating content.
We’re excited to see how people find it. In the spirit of continuous improvement, we’ll use feedback and data to inform future developments.”
Mike Cundall, Cantarus COO, comments:
"Our partnership with the British Army is built on a shared commitment to digital innovation. Following the successful redevelopment of the Army’s main website, we’re delighted to continue this collaboration by bringing Soldier magazine into the digital age. This project not only modernises a prestigious publication but also ensures its legacy remains accessible for years to come.”
This milestone launch, aligned with Soldier’s 80th anniversary and the approaching 80th anniversary of VE Day in 2025, reflects The British Army’s commitment to innovation and modernisation. The digital archive ensures that Soldier’s unparalleled record of military history remains a vital resource for generations to come.
The launch of Soldier Magazine’s new digital home follows Cantarus’ recent redevelopment of The British Army’s main website, which went live in October 2024. This ongoing collaboration highlights the Army’s drive to enhance its digital engagement and accessibility, ensuring its personnel and the public can connect with key information more effectively than ever.
