Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB)

A Smarter, Connected Future for CIOB Members

The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) is the world’s largest and most influential professional body for construction management and leadership. Representing more than 50,000 members in over 100 countries, CIOB has a Royal Charter committing them to work in the public interest, promoting professionalism and raising standards, and supporting innovation across the built environment sector.

The Challenge

CIOB had originally partnered with Cantarus to deliver their Members' Portal, but growing digital expectations – particularly among younger and international members – meant there was a pressing need to evolve beyond the website. CIOB needed a solution that could deliver more personalised value through mobile and help build stronger community engagement

We chose Cantarus because they understood the unique challenges of a membership body like ours. The MemConnect platform gave us the flexibility we needed without the time, cost, or complexity of a full bespoke build.

Our Solution

Together, we created CIOB Connect – a fully branded mobile app powered by our MemConnect platform. The app brings CIOB’s member services into one space, connecting people, content, and community more seamlessly than ever before.

The initial launch included:

  • An online community
  • Single sign-on with CIOB’s Microsoft Dynamics CRM
  • Real-time news from CIOB and their magazines
  • WhatsApp-style direct messaging between members

Since then, our partnership has continued to grow, with new app features rolled out to reflect member feedback and deepen value, including:

  • Event listings and filtered search
  • Learning and CPD access via LMS integration
  • A digital membership card with wallet support
  • A personalised dashboard
  • In-app podcasts
  • A more powerful member directory
  • Targeted push notifications
  • Customisable menu tiles linking to key CIOB website areas, including CIOB Jobs, CPD log, and the revised company directory

Results and Impact

CIOB Connect has now surpassed its original 20% member uptake target, with over 18,000 downloads, of which 6,800 are CIOB members. The appointment of a dedicated community manager has driven steady, meaningful engagement across the platform.

The app is now used to access CPD in the form of news, policy and industry updates, as well as networking and events. The seamless experience across systems has made it significantly easier for members to access the value of their membership.

With a clear focus on continued innovation, CIOB is now exploring deeper personalisation, digital journals, and richer CPD journeys within the app. Together, we’re looking at new ways to help CIOB deliver value through a holistic digital ecosystem – supporting the organisation’s long-term strategy to lead modern professionalism in construction around the globe.

Our CIOB Connect app is now an important part of our multiple communication channels strategy for members and non-members alike. A hugely valuable tool that enables our community to have a one stop shop for news, events, CPD content, member discussion, policy updates, podcasts and searchable directories. The appetite for increased functionality doesn’t stop and we are committed to working alongside Cantarus to deliver even more content and further improvements in the user experience
