Ever wondered what it’s like to be a Community Services Executive at Cantarus?

We spoke with Helen to find out how she blends her passion for sustainability, travel, and community engagement in her role supporting clients around the world.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and what your role is at Cantarus?

Hi, I’m Helen – a digital nomad and Community Services Executive. My role includes offering advice on best practices, helping with community upgrades, troubleshooting problems, writing content and monitoring community data.

I like to think I lead a very mindful life – I love reading, yoga and meditation. I love joining exercise classes. I love being outside in nature – hiking or running by the beach. I love sailing and travelling. I love watching YouTube and being inspired by others.

What’s your background and how did you get into your current role?

My background is in waste and resource management – I’ve done many roles in the sector, including compliance, logistics, content and events management and even a public education campaigner. During COVID, we stood up an online community with Cantarus which I managed. When I left my role at CIWM to travel, Cantarus invited me to join the team. I said yes – but it had to accommodate my travelling!

What have you been working on recently? Is there anything you are most proud of or excited about?

I recently joined the sustainability team for Umbraco on a voluntary basis. I spent two days at their HQ in Odense, Denmark, for their Community Teams event. It was a lot of fun to use my passion for sustainability to meet some new people and work towards creating positive environmental change within the digital world that we all live.

What’s a skill you’ve developed since working at Cantarus that you’re proud of?

I’ve learnt some SQL which I use to enhance the annual reports. I mainly taught myself, and I actually found the process really enjoyable as I started seeing results. I’ve also been learning all about the digital sector, which is very different from the sustainability sector – I still don’t know all the acronyms!

What’s a lesson you’ve learned from your time at Cantarus so far?

I absolutely adore being a digital nomad – so grateful for Cantarus allowing me to work and travel! Choosing where I work from makes a world of difference to my happiness.

If you weren’t in your current field, what would you be doing instead?

This is literally my favourite networking question. I always say I would love to be an Arctic Scientist or an author.

Can you share a fun fact about yourself that your colleagues might not know?

I love playing board games – recently I’ve been enjoying Qwirkle, Tiny Towns, Unstable Unicorns and Viticulture. Endless fun!
