IPEV Case Study

Building a contemporary digital experience for IPEV Members.

The Challenge

The International Private Equity and Venture Capital Valuation Guidelines (IPEV) puts forward recommendations, intended to correspond to best practice, on the valuation of private equity and venture capital investments.

The objectives of IPEV Members are to provide high-quality, principles-based valuation guidelines in order to assist compliance with accounting and regulatory requirements, in a form that is simple for practitioners to implement. As such, the IPEV website and Guidelines needed to be presented in a clear, easy-to-use manner.

Unfortunately, this wasn’t the case. The previous IPEV website had a dated, basic design which didn’t stand out from the crowd or engage its users. The images on the site were not relevant to the service provided, and with quite a dull colour scheme, the site did not correspond with what IPEV could do. As well, the site was unmanageable, with no controllable news publication system; text had to be added and removed as and when through an editor. It wasn’t a responsive site either, so didn’t perform well on mobile devices. Cantarus was tasked with helping IPEV to meet their goal of presenting a more modern, user-centred, engaging digital solution for their members.

Our Solution

We wanted to ensure that user experience (UX) was dramatically enhanced for IPEV members.

We delivered an impactful, intuitive concept for the redesign of the IPEV site, identifying responsiveness at the heart of the design process. We wanted to achieve an elegant and highly practical experience across all devices, catering for mobile and tablet traffic rather than just desktop. The design included:

  • A clear, engaging homepage hero banner with subtle parallax animation,
  • Sparse imagery, prioritising clear hierarchy of information,
  • Minimalistic aesthetic – making the most of white space to provide clearer communication,
  • Understated animation to complement the design.

Although modernising the site was crucial, we didn’t want to completely change the previous look. We made sure to include aspects such as the monochrome palette and iconography, but instead making these colours much bolder and more striking to deliver a more contemporary appearance and feel.

A clear and intuitive content management experience ensures that content can be kept up-to-date and consistent across the site. By re-platforming the IPEV website onto DNN, an award-winning enterprise CMS solution, content managers were empowered with the ability to easily create and modify pages without any prior technical knowledge. The powerful, built-in workflow engine has allowed the delegation of content creation across the team, while giving managers a final approval step before any changes are made visible on the live site.

The news publication system was highlighted as a particular pain-point with the previous system. Through the modular structure of DNN, we were able to implement the Cantarus Core Dispatch plug-in – a bespoke news and blogging solution that enables the maintenance of structured content through a dedicated, semi-headless content management area. By separating the management and visualisation of news articles, content can be surfaced through consistent templates across the site automatically, significantly reducing the manual effort involved in keeping content fresh.

Another key requirement for IPEV was enhanced navigation to better serve user needs, so we incorporated a full-screen menu to allow users to navigate effortlessly around the site. By taking over the whole screen, users are presented with far fewer distractions and can explore the site more instinctively.

The Results

The development phase was extremely well-thought through, allowing the new site to scale really well. With a modernised design, better usability and greater functionality, the digital experience has been hugely improved.

Since it went live, results from the new website include:

  • 96% increase in pageviews within three months,
  • 86% increase in total number of users within three months,
  • The ‘Valuation Guidelines’ page, a core page of the website and most visited, had an increase in pageviews by 92.8%,
  • This page has the largest percentage of entrances of all pages (56.27%), suggesting that users have bookmarked it and it is a useful resource which they will frequently return to.

Cantarus have done an outstanding job in refreshing the IPEV website, delivering an intuitive, modern and responsive product that far exceeded expectations. From start to finish the team were fantastic to work with and did a great job at simplifying the whole process. The praise from the IPEV Guidelines board has been extremely positive and the new site gives the Guidelines the platform and promotion it deserves.
