The Digital Dilemma

For most associations, the shift from print to digital is no longer a question of if – it’s how. For many, the choice comes down to two main routes: a web-based publication or a mobile app. Each offers unique advantages, and choosing between them isn’t simply a technical decision. It’s about understanding your members’ habits, your organisation’s goals, and how each format fits into your wider digital ecosystem.

We’ve helped associations of all sizes transform traditional journals and magazines into dynamic, digital experiences across both web and mobile.

In this blog, we’ll explore the pros, cons, and considerations of each format – and why, for many organisations, the most powerful solution might be a combination of both.

The case for web-based publications

A web-first approach remains the most accessible and cost-effective starting point for many organisations.

Web publications are available instantly through a browser, no download required, making them ideal for open access and SEO visibility. Search engines can index your content, allowing non-members to discover it organically and increasing your visibility to prospective audiences.

Web-based formats also come with flexibility. You can tailor your layout to suit different types of content:

  • News-style layouts for regular updates
  • Mixed-style layouts blending news, insights, and multimedia
  • Magazine-style layouts for immersive, issue-based content

Because they’re easy to update and distribute, web publications lend themselves well to associations that prioritise reach and discoverability. They integrate naturally with your existing CMS or website, meaning less technical overhead and smoother editorial workflows.

When your goal is to make content widely accessible, or if your members tend to engage through desktop browsers or newsletters, a web-first publication could be the perfect fit.

The case for mobile app publications

While web remains a strong choice, a dedicated mobile app unlocks deeper engagement opportunities.

Apps give your members an always-on connection to your content. They enable offline access, letting users save and read materials wherever they are, which is particularly valuable for professionals on the go or in the field.

Push notifications mean you can alert members instantly when new issues or features go live, bringing content directly to their home screens rather than waiting for them to find it.

A native app also allows for richer multimedia experiences. Embedded video, audio interviews, and interactive elements feel cohesive within an app environment. And from a branding perspective, offering a publication as part of your member-only app creates a sense of exclusivity – a premium benefit that reinforces the value of membership itself.

The Royal College of Psychiatrists’ BJPsych Journals App is a great example. Purpose-built for mobile, it offers offline access, intuitive navigation, and thousands of users joined on launch day – proof that the right format can dramatically boost reach and engagement.

The best of both worlds

For organisations with diverse audiences, the right answer may be a combination of web and app.

A hybrid approach allows you to meet your members wherever they are. Your web publication can serve as the open, discoverable gateway to your content, while your app delivers a richer, more personal experience for loyal or paying members.

With the right technology stack, both can share the same content source, ensuring consistency without duplicating effort. A headless CMS or integrated platform like MemConnect makes it possible to publish once and deliver across multiple channels.

A good example of an organisation having the best of both worlds is the British Army’s Soldier Magazine. We transformed this long-standing print title into a Progressive Web App (PWA) – a website that looks and behaves like a native app. Readers can access the full archive online, save the site to their home screen, and enjoy an app-like experience without needing to download anything from the app store. The result is the best of both worlds: the reach and searchability of a web platform, combined with the engagement and usability of an app.

Hybrid solutions aren’t just about reach; they’re also about strategy. They give your members choice, letting them engage in the way that suits them best, whether that’s catching up on articles at their desk or reading offline during travel.

Building digital publications with purpose

Whether you choose web, app, or both, your format should align with your member experience goals. Digital publishing isn’t about replacing print – it’s about expanding your reach, personalising engagement, and making every interaction with your content count.

We help associations build digital publications with purpose – publications that don’t just inform, but inspire. Whether you’re looking to modernise a long-standing journal, explore new member engagement channels, or lay the groundwork for future innovation, our team can help you find the right approach for your organisation and your audience.
